If you’re considering diving into the world of 3D printing, the Ender 3 V3 SE might be the perfect choice for you. In this review, we’ll delve into the pros and cons of this model, helping you determine if it’s the right fit for your needs.
Key Features and Specifications
The Ender 3 V3 SE boasts a build volume of 220 x 220 x 250 millimetres, providing ample space for a variety of projects. The machine offers a standard print speed of 180 millimetres per second, with claims of reaching up to 250 millimetres per second. While we haven’t tested it at the maximum speed, it performs admirably at 180 millimetres per second, delivering high-quality prints consistently.
The printer comes equipped with several features that enhance the user experience, such as an auto bed levelling function, a PC sprung steel removable build plate, and a maximum nozzle temperature of 260°C. The build plate heats up to 100°C, making it suitable for various filament types. Additionally, the printer includes a 32-bit silent mainboard, a colour screen with a rotary knob display, and other high-end components, all at an attractive price point.
User Experience and Design
One of the standout aspects of the Ender 3 V3 SE is its user-friendly design. The setup process is straightforward, and the printer is ready to go almost straight out of the box. Compared to its predecessors, the V3 SE offers a more streamlined and simplified experience, which seems to be Creality’s goal with this series.
This model is on par with the Ender 3 S1 and S1 Pro, with several upgrades. Despite being more affordable, it includes more features than the S1 series. Creality has managed to reduce costs by introducing a full injection-moulded base instead of the traditional T-slot extrusions, which has also helped in making the machine more compact and lightweight. Despite the weight reduction, the machine remains extremely rigid and aesthetically pleasing.
Innovations in Design
Creality has made some notable changes in this model, particularly in the bed design. Instead of the traditional extrusion profile with V wheels, the Ender 3 V3 SE uses two smooth linear rails, which provide excellent stability and rigidity. The bed slides smoothly, with no manual levelling required, a feature that beginners will particularly appreciate.
The machine also includes a CR Touch probe for automatic bed levelling and a strain gauge sensor that automatically sets the Z offset, though it can still be adjusted manually if needed. Additionally, the printer is equipped with a power recovery function, ensuring that your print can resume in case of a power outage.
Print Quality and Performance
The print quality of the Ender 3 V3 SE is impressive for its price range. We tested it with several prints, including a wicker basket with challenging overhangs and a small skull, both of which came out clean with minimal stringing and no visible layer lines. Dimensional accuracy was also on point, as demonstrated by a two-part rocket print that fit together seamlessly.
All our test files were sliced using the Creality Print app, which we highly recommend for beginners. The app is optimised for Creality printers and offers a range of settings that can be adjusted as you gain more experience. Although other slicers like Orca Slicer or Prusa Slicer are available, the Creality Print app is an excellent starting point.
Minor Drawbacks
While the Ender 3 V3 SE is a solid machine, there are a few minor drawbacks worth mentioning. The machine’s top brace, made from injection-moulded plastic, could potentially be damaged if you use a larger-than-normal filament spool. We recommend using a desk stand filament spool holder for larger spools to avoid any risk.
Another minor issue is the noise from the extruder fan, which lacks a cover. If you plan on printing with PETG or similar materials, it’s advisable to add a fan cover to prevent any damage from stringing. Lastly, while the absence of an LED light to illuminate the print bed is a small inconvenience, it would have been a nice addition for those who print in low-light conditions.
Assembly and Final Thoughts
Assembling the Ender 3 V3 SE is straightforward and takes about 20 minutes. The process involves attaching the gantry to the base, mounting the extruder on the X-axis, and setting up the power supply unit, display screen, and filament spool holder. Once assembled, levelling the bed is a breeze, thanks to the machine’s automated features.
Overall, the Ender 3 V3 SE is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced users. Its ease of use, combined with high-quality components and impressive print quality, makes it a standout in its price range. While there are a few minor areas that could be improved, these are far outweighed by the machine’s strengths.
